چکیده
Understanding the mechanisms that allow species coexistence across spatial scales is of great interest to ecologists. Many such proposed involve trade-offs between in different life-history traits, with distinct being expected be prevalent at varying temporal and scales. The dominance–discovery trade-off posits differ their ability find use resources quickly, contrast monopolize those resources, a mechanism analogous competition-colonization trade-off. We investigated occurrence this structuring genus Pheidole Westwood, 1839 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) assemblages Atlantic Forest remnants. According trade-off, consistent interspecific variation should observed along axis discovery dominance. established 55 sampling units two sites, each unit consisting sardine bait monitored for 3 h. There was no distinction among or dominate food sources, suggesting does not explain coexistence. low levels aggression could prevent establishment dominance hierarchies, whereas order arrival sources resource partitioning through priority effects.

Relationship Between Food Stores and Foraging Behavior of Pheidole ceres (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)
In temperate climates, animals that produce long-term food caches must forage simultaneously for nutrients to survive, reproduce, and collect enough stores to survive the winter. Thus, an animal is simultaneously makes two foraging choices 1) what nutrients to collect for its immediate needs and 2) what food items should be stored. The cues the animal uses to make these two decisions shoulddiff...
متن کاملInordinate Spinescence: Taxonomic Revision and Microtomography of the Pheidole cervicornis Species Group (Hymenoptera, Formicidae)
The ant genus Pheidole-for all of its hyperdiversity and global ubiquity-is remarkably conservative with regard to morphological disparity. A striking exception to this constrained morphology is the spinescent morphotype, which has evolved multiple times across distantly related lineages of Indoaustralian Pheidole. The Pheidole cervicornis group contains perhaps the most extraordinary spinescen...
متن کاملA revision of Pheidole Westwood (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in the islands of the southwest Indian Ocean and designation of a neotype for the invasive Pheidole megacephala.
The myrmicine genus Pheidole Westwood is revised for the smaller islands of the Southwest Indian Ocean: Comoros, Juan de Nova Island, Mauritius, Mayotte, Reunion, and the Seychelles. Descriptions and keys are provided for the thirteen species on these islands of which seven are newly described: P. decepticon sp. n., P. dodo sp. n., P. komori sp. n, P. loki sp. n., P. megatron sp. n., P. ragnax ...
متن کاملIdentifying Shifts in Leaf-Litter Ant Assemblages (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) across Ecosystem Boundaries Using Multiple Sampling Methods
Global or regional environmental changes in climate or land use have been increasingly implied in shifts in boundaries (ecotones) between adjacent ecosystems such as beech or oak-dominated forests and forest-steppe ecotones that frequently co-occur near the southern range limits of deciduous forest biome in Europe. Yet, our ability to detect changes in biological communities across these ecosys...
متن کاملNo evidence of trade-offs in the evolution of sperm numbers and sperm size in mammals.
Post-copulatory sexual selection, in the form sperm competition, has influenced the evolution of several male reproductive traits. However, theory predicts that sperm competition would lead to trade-offs between numbers and size of spermatozoa because increased costs per cell would result in a reduction of sperm number if both traits share the same energetic budget. Theoretical models have prop...
